In 1993, Dr. Melody Martin and her husband, Curtis, established Martin Audiology, which was named the No. 1 hearing center in central Texas for four consecutive years. After traveling to Mexico to join other audiologists in providing free hearing care to more than 800 children and families, the Martins created the “So the World May Hear” Texas Jam, an annual concert that raises money and awareness for local hearing impaired children. They have also created the Martin Audiology Foundation to help underprivileged children and adults gain access to needed hearing care.
Build on Success. Look at successful large-scale national fundraising events that may capture the interests of local residents. Follow the basic format of a proven fundraiser and localize it to the requirements of your community.
Pick an Event with Wide Appeal. Whether it is a country music concert or poker party, make sure the event will be a draw in your community. In central Texas, country music was a natural choice. Celebrities attract more participants and support, and we were fortunate enough to know many country musicians through our work.
Choose Your Partners Carefully. Look for partners who bring expertise that you are lacking. Connect with a facility that has hosted similar events. Find food and beverage vendors who regularly work on fundraising events. Approach sponsors to cover printing and other promotional costs.
Get Community Buy-In. People want to take care of the needs of neighbors in their communities. Leverage your involvement and tenure in the community to best position your fundraiser. Stress the importance of community participation at every level, no matter how big or how small.
Put a Face on Your Cause. People relate to people first; the cause follows. Remind supporters that they know the individuals who will benefit from your fundraising efforts—they live in your community. In our case, we showcased children who were able to hear for the first time with hearing aids purchased with funds raised from our annual concert.
Engage the Media. Give the media hands-on access to event participants and those who benefit from the events. Meet personally with radio, television, and newspaper personalities and encourage their involvement in garnering public support.
Market, Market, Market. Publicize your event in every medium possible. Look for marketing opportunities through schools, churches, and professional and social organizations.
Use Every Contact You Have. You must be ready to roll up your sleeves and contact virtually every person you know. Everyone knows someone who may be of help in planning, implementing, and supporting your event.
Remember the Goodness of People. People are generally good, kind, and giving. They are eager to put their money behind causes that assist fellow members of their communities.
