ACCOLADE HIGHLIGHTS

 

 

The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership

 

Teresa Peterson ’07, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Literacy and Learning in the Content Areas, presented “Laying the Foundation: Trusting Students and Teachers to Achieve” with her school administrator at the Coalition of Essential Schools Fall Forum in Denver.

 

Elaine Robertson ’07, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Integrating Technology in the Classroom, presented “Introduction to Finale NotePad Software for the General Music Classroom” and “Follow-up In-Depth Discussion: Finale NotePad for General Music” at the 2007 Technology Institute for Music Educators National Conference.

 

Diane Johnson Burns ’06, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, was certified in reading and language arts by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. Burns is a reading coach and literacy specialist for the Rockford School District in Illinois.

 

John Hoving ’06, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Middle Level Education, was named principal at Holy Family Middle School in Bay City, Michigan.

 

Leslie Minton ’06, who earned an M.S. in Education, published What If Your ABCs Were Your 123s? Building Connections Between Literacy and Numeracy through Corwin Press.

 

Gloria Brown Brooks ’05, who earned an M.S. in Education and is now in the Ed.D. program with a specialization in Teacher Leadership, trained as an Intel Master trainer to provide professional development for her county and has given a technology presentation to her district principals. In addition, she is the teacher leader for her school’s accreditation team.

 

Leanne Maule ’05, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Integrating Technology in the Classroom, was named the 2008 district Teacher of the Year. She is a teacher in the English department at Cartersville High School in Georgia.

 

Judith Brown ’04, who earned an M.S. in Education and is now a Ph.D. in Education student, wrote a social skills curriculum guide for her school based on the Application section of her first Knowledge Area Module.

 

Beverly Kerecman ’04, who earned an M.S. in Education and is now an Ed.D. student, is a National Board Certified Teacher.

 

Dr. Jeffrey Stephen Grote ’94, who earned a Ph.D. in Education, is studying for a Doctor of Ministry degree through The University of the South, in Tennessee. He is an employment team specialist at The Arc of Southern Maryland.

 


 

School of Health Sciences

 

Wendy Borcyk ’06, who earned a Master of Public Health with a specialization in Community Health Education, was appointed employee health nurse at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Borcyk plans to establish an employee wellness program.

 

Dr. Bruce Dart ’05, who earned a Ph.D. in Public Health, was elected vice president of the National Association of County and City Health Officials. He will be president-elect in 2008 and president in 2009.

 

Dr. Adelbert B. James ’03, who earned a Ph.D. in Health Services with a specialization in Community Health Promotion and Education, presented two papers at the International Society for Sexually Transmitted Diseases Research annual meeting in Seattle.

 

Dr. Harold C. Cohen ’00, who earned a Ph.D. in Health Services, served as a co-writer and subject matter expert for the governor’s Virginia Tech Mass Shooting Review Panel. Harold co-authored the chapter “Emergency Medical Services and Incident Command.” He is a senior analyst at SPC/TriData Corp.

 

Dr. Virginia Campbell ’95, who earned a Ph.D. in Health Services, was named chief executive officer of University Physicians Healthcare Hospital and Clinics at Kino Campus in Tucson, Ariz. A registered nurse with 22 years of experience, Campbell has worked in a variety of academic and community settings, including the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

 


 

School of Management

 

Shontarius Aikens ’06, who earned an M.B.A. with specializations in Marketing and Human Resource Management, was appointed program coordinator and lecturer at Mays Business School at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas.

 

Dr. Charles Minnick ’06, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences with a specialization in Leadership and Organizational Change, is the dean of the College of Business and Professional Studies at Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa.

 

Dr. Cheryl Crozier Garcia ’03, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, presented “Using Core Values as a Means to Accomplish Cultural Change: Two Examples” at the seventh International Conference on Knowledge, Culture and Change in Organizations in Singapore. Garcia is chair of the master’s program in human resource management at Hawaii Pacific University and was recently promoted to associate professor.

 

Dr. Robert W. Gerulat ’00, who earned a Ph.D. in Administration/Management, is now the statewide director for Empire State College’s FORUM Management Program, which serves experienced mid-career managers and business professionals. He also serves as an assistant professor.

 

Dr. Sherry Robinson ’00, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, was granted tenure by Penn State University and promoted to associate professor of business administration.

 

Dr. Al Taccone ’99, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, was appointed dean of Career and Technical Education at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, Calif.

 

Dr. Chris Adalikwu ’94, who earned a Ph.D. in Administration/Management, was named associate dean and graduate business coordinator for Columbia Southern University. Previously, he chaired Concordia College’s Division of Business Administration and Computer Information. As a practitioner, Adalikwu has held positions with State Farm, J.C. Penney, and Metropolitan Life. He also has been a Fulbright Scholar and guest lecturer in several countries.

 

Dr. Shamir Andrew Ally ’94, who earned a Ph.D. in Administration/Management, was selected as an external examiner for Ed.D. candidates at George Washington University, in Washington, D.C. He also presented a “2007 Cricket World Cup Super 8 Matches in Guyana, Visitors Survey Report” at the University of Guyana to an audience that included Guyana’s president and ministers of sports and tourism.

 


 

School of Nursing

 

Abigail Cornett ’07, who earned an M.S. degree in Nursing, was recognized for excellence in teaching by North Georgia Technical College’s Blairsville’s campus, where she is a practical nursing instructor. She has 18 years of occupational experience in nursing and has been teaching at the Blairsville campus for seven years.

 

Karen Jan ’06, who earned an M.S. degree in Nursing, had a paper, “Avian Flu: Pandemic Preparedness,” published in Home Healthcare Nurse.

 


 

School of Public Policy and Administration

 

Kathleen Conlee ’06, who earned a Master of Public Administration, is director of program management for Animal Research Issues at The Humane Society of the United States. She is responsible for the “Chimps Deserve Better” campaign, which seeks to end the use of chimpanzees in biomedical research and testing.

 


 

School of Psychology

 

Dr. Artemis Pipinelli ’05, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialization in Clinical Psychology, received her licensure permit to practice psychology in the state of New York. She gave three presentations, “Forgiveness and Genocide,” “Aging and Ethnicity,” and “Sex Trafficking,” at the American Psychological Association convention.

 

Dr. Jim Price ’03, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology, contributed a chapter, “Psychosocial and Psychophysiological Implications of Amputation,” to Pre- and Post-Operative Services for the Amputee with Diabetes published by the American Diabetes Association.

 


 

School of Social Service

 

Dr. Jonathan S. Gray ’07, who earned a Ph.D. in Human Services with a specialization in Counseling, is creating a nonprofit organization that will work with schools and communities to develop programs for at-risk youth in Israel.

 

Dr. Barbra A. Hughes ’00, who earned a Ph.D. in Human Services, received a 2007 Power of Prevention Award from the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund for her work in the prevention of obesity.

 

Dr. Janet Cunningham ’97, who earned a Ph.D. in Human Services, recently traveled to Turkey to conduct regression therapy training courses.

 


 

Other

 

Dr. Augustus Melton Black ’75, who earned a Ph.D., had the basketball court at Cherryville High in Cherryville, N.C., where he is an assistant basketball coach, named in his honor. He was head coach of the Ironmen from 1980–84 and has served as assistant coach since 1994. Black, a mentor to many students, was quoted in a newspaper article as saying, “We have had so many great players who have become lawyers, doctors, teachers. I think athletics can teach young people how to be responsible and to carry a load.”

 

Dr. James R. Fisher ’78, who earned a Ph.D., published A Look Back to See Ahead: Our Chronic Culture Viewed from the 1970s, through Authorhouse.
