The Richard W. Riley College of Education and Leadership

 

Dr. Hope Blecher-Sass ’08, who earned an Ed.D. with a specialization in Teacher Leadership, co-authored a kindergarten-through-second- grade literacy assessment profile, presented a televised workshop about writing for parents of kindergarten and first-grade students, and was interviewed about “digital stories” for a TV segment.

 

Debby Dowell ’07, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Elementary Reading and Literacy, was named Hillsborough County [Florida] Teacher of the Year in February. She teaches at Bartels Middle School.

 

Dr. Jim Lehmann ’07, who earned an Ed.D. with a specialization in Teacher Leadership, is president of The Foundation for Center for Research of Whales, which promotes environmental education and research in Ecuador.

 

Dr. Helen Y. Sung ’07, who earned a Ph.D. in Education, presented “Influence of Culture on Parenting Practices of East Asian Families” and “Emotional Intelligence of Older Adolescents” at the National Association of School Psychologists. In March, she presented a seminar, “The Importance, Development and Understanding of Emotional Intelligence,” and a workshop, “Coaching Parents to Help Develop Emotional Intelligence in their Youths,” for a nonprofit organization for teens and parents.

 

Dr. Dahlia McGregor Petgrave ’06, who earned a Ph.D. in Education with a self-designed specialization in science education, published an article, “Effective Ways of Teaching Science Teachers to Use Strategies,” in the fall 2007 Journal of Educational Practice for Social Change, which is published by the Walden chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. In September, she became the lead teacher for South Shore High School in Brooklyn, N.Y.

 

Dr. Edwisimone Rodriguez-Dorestant ’06, who earned a Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in Higher Education, became an executive director of student development and student services at Medgar Evers College, City University of New York, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

 

Bri-Anne Alleyne ’05, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, was named assistant principal at a New York City special education school. She is currently enrolled in Walden’s Ed.D. program with a specialization in Administrator Leadership for Teaching and Learning.

 

Tara Covington-Kelley ’05, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Integrating Technology in the Classroom, launched her own educational/training consulting business at www.taracovingtonconsulting.com.

 

Dr. Deborah W. Proctor ’05, who earned a Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in Educational Technology, is the 2008 chair of the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) Eighth International Conference being held in August 2008 in Minneapolis. Proctor is the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities’ e-curriculum director for Minnesota Online.

 

Shawn Beaudette ’04, who earned an M.S. in Education, was named a Teacher of the Year in the Prior Lake-Savage Area (Minnesota) school district for 2007–08.

 

Erin Brooke Elliott ’04, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Integrating Technology in the Classroom, accepted a one-year fellowship position at the University of Alabama at Birmingham partnering with the Alabama State Department of Education to research “Girls Engaging in Mathematics and Science (GEMS).” She will be conducting research for her Walden dissertation The Effects on Self-Esteem of Girls in Rural and Inner-City Schools Using Technology to Increase Mathematics and Science Scores. Elliott is a Ph.D. in Education student specializing in Educational Technology.

 

Charlene A. Coles ’03, who earned an M.S. in Education with a specialization in Elementary Reading and Literacy, was one of five national finalists for the National Federation of Republican Women Favorite Teacher Award.

 

Dr. Peter A. Maresco ’98, who earned a Ph.D. in Education, published “Developing Digital Course Materials: Who Has Time?” in Academic Exchange Quarterly. He will present at the Popular Culture Association National Conference in San Francisco in March. Maresco is a clinical assistant professor of marketing at the John F. Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University in Fair field, Conn.

 

Dr. W. Spencer Mullin ’95, who earned a Ph.D. in Education, was unanimously chosen to head the Dracut public schools in Massachusetts.

 


 

School of Counseling and Social Service

 

Dr. Steven Gilbert ’06, who earned a Ph.D. in Human Services with a specialization in Criminal Justice, provides an annual $500 award through the Gilbert Forensic Science Scholarship for criminal justice or criminal investigations to students at the State University of New York, Canton. Gilbert also founded the Omega Upsilon chapter of the Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society.

 

Dr. Gregory E. Sumner ’06, who earned a Ph.D. in Human Services with a specialization in Criminal Justice, published his dissertation research as an article, “Community Policing: A Critical Analysis of a Small Police Department,” in the journal Professional Issues in Criminal Justice. Sumner is the founder and president of Professional Screening and Information, a pre-employment screening company that received the Small Business of the Year Award from the Greater Rome [Georgia] Chamber of Commerce.

 


 

School of Health Sciences

 

Wanda F. Carter ’07, who earned a Master of Public Health, was awarded a three-year fellowship with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in their Public Health Prevention Services Program. Carter is a prevention specialist on a six-month assignment on the Healthier Worksite Initiative in the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity Branch at the National Center for Chronic Disease and Health Promotion in the CDC.

 

Cori Ofstead ’06, who earned a Master of Public Health, co-authored two articles published in the February 2008 issue of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology—“Influenza Vaccination Among Registered Nurses” and “Receptivity to Mandatory Influenza Vaccination Policies for Healthcare Workers Among Registered Nurses Working on Inpatient Units.”

 

Dr. Marcia E. Hall ’05, who earned a Ph.D. in Health Services, was the lead author and researcher on a co-authored article titled “Military Sexual Trauma Services for Women Veterans in the Veterans Health Administration: The Patient-Care Practice Environment and Perceived Organizational Support” and published in Psychological Services, a peer-reviewed American Psychological Association (APA) journal.

 

Dr. Jacques Jovin ’89, who earned a Ph.D. in Health Services, is now executive director of Parole & Action, a Christian organization, and an instructor at the State University of Haiti.

 


 

School of Management

 

Dr. Anita M. Cassard ’07, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences with a specialization in Leadership and Organizational Change, was invited to speak on the topic of women and leadership at the annual AICPA conference in October 2008 and addressed a newly formed women’s leadership group in June 2008 in Minneapolis.

 

Dr. Craig P. Miller ’07, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences with a specialization in Engineering Management, was promoted to global quality director at DA NanoMaterials LLC.

 

Dr. Ken “SKC” Ogbonnia ’07, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences with a specialization in Leadership and Organizational Change, has been appointed chairman of the board of directors of First Texas Energy Corp. He also recently joined Davenport University to teach leadership in the Sneden Graduate School.

 

Dr. George Stanley Reeley Jr. ’06, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences with a specialization in Leadership and Organizational Change, was appointed as a fulltime faculty member at Strayer University – Greenville, S.C., teaching in undergraduate and graduate programs in business, management, and marketing.

 

Dr. Walter R. McCollum ’04, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, was elected to the board of directors for Community for Creative Non- Violence in Washington, D.C., the largest comprehensive homeless center in the United States. The center provides shelter, food, clothing, medical care, case management, educational and art programs, and daily support to 2,500 homeless people.

 

Dr. Cheryl Crozier Garcia ’03, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, was elected to the board of directors of the Human Resource Certification Institute. Dr. Crozier Garcia is an associate professor of human resource management at Hawaii Pacific University and program chair of the Master of Arts in Human Resource Management program.

 

Dr. Mary Fischer-McKee ’02, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, contributed a chapter titled “What Is a Leader?” to the book Women as Leaders: Strategies for Empowerment & Communication (Professional Woman Publishing, 2007).

 

Dr. Jean Murray ’00, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, has several blogs: Practice Start Up Success (www.practicestartupsuccess.com) for professionals starting their practices; The Thriving Writer (www.thethrivingwriter.com) for freelance writers who want to start their own writing business; and Small Business Boomers (www.smallbusinessboomers.com) for baby boomers.

 

Dr. Sharon Freeman ’98, who earned a Ph.D. in Applied Management and Decision Sciences, coauthored Africa’s Youth Define Leadership, published by The All American Small Business Exporters Association.

 

Dr. Chris Adalikwu ’94, who earned a Ph.D. in Administration/Management (now Applied Management and Decision Sciences), was named dean of the College of Business at Columbia Southern University. As a practitioner, Adalikwu has held positions with State Farm, J.C. Penney and Metropolitan Life. He also has been a Fulbright Scholar and international guest lecturer.

 

Dr. Madeline Frank ’94, who earned a Ph.D. in Administration/Management, is publishing a monthly newsletter about how classical music can enhance people’s lives. The newsletter is archived on her Web site, www.madelinefrankviola.com.

 


 

School of Nursing

 

Theresa Brosche ’07, who earned an M.S. degree in Nursing, presented her capstone project as a poster at the National League for Nursing Faculty Leadership Conference in Orlando, Fla., in January. Her poster was awarded the “Best Graduate Student Poster.”

 

Gayla Love ’07, who earned an M.S. degree in Nursing with a specialization in Education, accepted a position as the director for the practical nursing program at Griffin Technical College.

 

Gregg A. Thompson ’07, who earned an M.S. degree in Nursing, was promoted to assistant professor (nursing) for a single purpose baccalaureate of nursing degree program at MedCentral College of Nursing in Mansfield, Ohio.

 

Marilyne Gustafson ’83, who earned an M.S. degree in Nursing, received the 2007 Distinguished Alumni Humanitarian Award from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing Alumni Society.

 


 

School of Psychology

 

Kozhi Sidney Makai ’06, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology, published Born Beating the Odds, a “no-nonsense discourse on the challenges we each face daily,” through Scrolls & Scribes.

 

Dr. Michael Hand ’03, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology with a specialization in Clinical Psychology, was elected to the board of the Association for Advancement of Psychology in Texas, which is the main political outreach board for the Texas Psychological Association. He also is a board member of the Texas Psychological Association’s Texas Psychological Foundation, which is a nonpolitical board that works to provide education about mental health issues and the role of psychologists in addressing these issues, as well as to provide scholarships and support for prospective psychologists in Texas. Dr. Hand continues with his private practice in El Paso.

 

Dr. Sue Walsh ’01, who earned a Ph.D. in Psychology, received her license as a psychologist in Texas. She is in private practice in San Antonio. She also is an adjunct faculty member for San Antonio College.

 


 

School of Public Policy and Administration

 

Dr. Tony Leisner ’05, who earned a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration, was listed in the 2008 editions of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who in Finance and Industry.
